Grain and Celery Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette

Grain and Celery Salad - New in the Costco Deli

New grab and go ready-to-eat Grain and Celery Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette is now at Costco for the Summer. This is a new item, and reviews are heavily mixed. In full transparency, I got the “hate celery” gene and so I haven’t tried it (and do not plan to review it).

Availability Note: The Kirkland Signature Grain and Celery salad is available in Costco warehouses nationwide. I expect that this will be available for a few months and then replaced…but it will probably ultimately depend on how well it sells. The jury is still out on whether members love it or hate it…so it could be sooner rather than later!

.

What’s in It?

As stated, celery isn’t my cup of jo…but I do think it looks pretty good if it weren’t for that. Generally speaking I like quinoa and grain salads so it’s unfortunate about the celery! The Kirkland celery and grain salad has chickpeas, kale, cabbage, dried cranberries, sliced almonds, onions, carrots and bulgar wheat. And of course CELERY. [Yucky. LOL!]

I do especially appreciate that the apple cider vinaigrette dressing is in two separate packets on the side. Makes it easy to split up and take for work lunch or just easier to use for smaller households.

  1. Please rename this product! It’s so good and heathy! I added tomatoes and feta cheese to make it even more delicious!

  2. This salad is absolutely delicious ! There is barely any celery in it , so you celery haters should give it a try. My whole family likes it. We had it with dinner last night and then I brihht leftovers to work for my lunch today. So yummy!

    1. Agree!! I finally did try it and I like it. A few bites here and there I do note the celery, but overall, it’s not a dealbreaker and I have bought it since. I’m happy it’s made its way into the regular line up, and so many people love it!

      1. I had some for breakfast and it made me feel tired. I looked at the ingredients then to see that canola oil is the first ingenious in the dressing. So will try it again with my homemade dressing as canola oil is toxic.

        1. Agree – I don’t use the dressing either usually to be honest. Almost all bottled/pre-made salad dressing uses canola oil unfortunately…seems to be par for the course in my experience. I usually put a little lemon seasoned olive oil on it with a little salt and call it a day. Sometimes I add some feta.

  3. What is the big secret about the calorie count of the apple cider vinegar dressing provided with the Kirkland grain and celery salad? This is important nutritional information that should be provided to the consumer. I know that Costcoโ€˜s bottom line is sales thatโ€™s a given. But this salad is delicious with or without the dressing. Why not make our lives easier and give us the nutritional information on the salad dressing separately? We are all just trying to eat as healthily as we can and would appreciate Costcoโ€™s help.

    1. I agree. I always appreciate it when prepared foods provide the nutritional panel with and without sauces. I understand everything cannot be broken down…but sauce is such a obvious source of fat/calories/sodium and one that many people can substitute or modify serving size and – SIGH – suffice to say…I agree. I am only provided with the total info though unfortunately. I wish I had it to share with you.

I think it’s probably a safe bet that if there are “standard” vinaigrette fat and calorie estimates…it will fall around that. The salad itself is really probably very low in calories and fat. I suspect the dressing and cranberries are the two that add the most calories, on a relative basis.

  4. I have to heartily add my name to the positive reviews of this salad. I love it!! And I haven’t even tried it with the dressing yet. It is tasty enough unadorned, and I’m a big taste lover.

  5. My husband and I just bought this and we love it. Very refreshing, delicious, and versatile. We have it alone or on a lettuce salad, and will buy this again. Itโ€™s packed with nutrition and the flavor is great.

  6. I just discovered this salad a couple weeks ago. I was a little skeptical because I HATE raw chickpeas. This salad has a few in every bite, but…. they don’t bother me! They actually add to the heartiness and texture of the salad. The celery is very minimal – strange why it even made it into the name of the item, honestly. It is NOT a celery salad. It’s a salad with celery in it. I encourage you to try it, even if you HATE celery. The dressing is a really nice compliment and probably helps with my chickpea aversion. I also, on a “big back” adventure, tried it with a sweet and nutty ginger sauce as the dressing instead, and it was AMAZING! Pretty much better than the vinaigrette that comes with it, lol.

    1. Thank you for your review and dressing suggestions! Where do you buy the sweet and nutty ginger sauce, that sounds good!!

  7. Absolutely love this salad! Many great healthy ingredients! Love the crunchiness! Love celery. With all the ingredients mixed together, you canโ€™t taste any one singley!! A year round keeper!

  8. Picked this up at the Davenport, Iowa store yesterday. Love it! It’s very refreshing, has lots of good ingredients and the dressing is very good. The celery is not at all overpowering and is in very small pieces. I like that the dressing comes in two packets. I transferred it to a small covered bowl for ease of use. Great one-dish meal (add Costco chicken if you want) or as a side salad.

    1. Agree! Very happy its been added to the regular line up! Great base and I toss on whatever leftoevers I need to get rid of in the fridge – extra veggies, grilled meat, salad…toss em on! lol. Thanks for adding your review!

  9. Hi. I donโ€™t know how anyone could not love this salad. It is awesome. Bought one container and didnโ€™t catch the enclosed dressing so used another vinegarette dressing. Both are good. I loved everything in it. Went back and bought two more cartons. Keep it coming. Itโ€™s unbelievable.

    1. I hope the decision makers read all the comments on this post – SO MANY FANS of this!! I agree – this should go into the year-round product line!

    2. I have just discovered celery and grain salad and also love it… without the dressing actually! Do you know what the calorie content is for the salad itself?

      1. Unfortunately I don’t know that info – I think if you look at the fat/calories of a Apple Cider Vinaigrette from the grocery store and back out that fat/calories – it’s probably a reasonable estimate? But I apologize, I don’t have that data from Costco.

  10. Delicious salad ! Could eat it every day . Was told today at Costco that it will be around for a couple more weeks and then they will introduce a harvest salad . Will miss the celery salad .

    1. I saw the harvest salad at my store last week – currently we have both – it looks good but I haven’t tried it yet. I love butternut squash so it works for me but it did have a lot of butternut squash in it (maybe good maybe bad depending on the person?). I’ll try it later this week and write up a review!

      1. I bought the salad today for the first time. Itโ€™s absolutely delicious, Iโ€™m sorry to hear that Costco is going to replace it this fall. I could eat it everyday!!

        1. I have heard it’s going to be replaced with the Harvest one – but I’ve had both in my store for a good month now – with any luck we’ll keep it? Fingers crossed – I like both but do prefer this one myself too.

    2. Iโ€™m a fan! I love it and Iโ€™m not a fan of celery either, it works well in this salad because it gives a good crunch and the pieces are small. A new favorite! (If you get it with the rotisserie chicken, shred the chicken and add it- even better!

  11. This is my new favorite salad. I do happen to love celery, but I understand when thereโ€™s something that you donโ€™t like it can turn you off to a Food item. I search every label carefully to make sure there is no cilantro, which seems to be everywhere these days. The salad was fantastic. I would eat it every day for someone eating a whole food plant-based diet very handy meal to grab.

    1. Thank you for stopping by to leave your thoughts – and so happy to hear another favorable review! This one has definitely been a member favorite for Costco!

  12. I’m not a kale or celery lover but I thought this salad was delish! The different tastes all blend together well. You can add in more protein and use your own dressing to mix it up, especially if you’re a small family and it takes a few days to finish it off.

  13. Itโ€™s so good, the only salad I crave! But now that I know how high the caloric content is (although good calories), Iโ€™ll eat smaller portions. The celery was a bit surprising but itโ€™s def not overwhelming.

  14. I also do not like celery. Had I just read the label, I never wouldโ€™ve tried it. But I just grabbed the sample in the store that the Costco person told me was an ancient grains and kale salad. LOVED. IT. Walked over to pick it up, saw โ€œceleryโ€ on the label and walked back over to the sample table to make sure it was the same thing. It was. I brought it home and have eaten it every day for lunch since! All of the ingredients mix so I do not taste the individual parts. The texture of the chickpeas stands out and it is the only ingredient that I can identify while eating. I absolutely love it. I hope they donโ€™t stop making it any time soon!

    1. Thank you for sharing! So funny they chose to put celery in the title – as it’s such a love it hate it ingredient – but nonetheless it’s great that it’s not in such an amount to ruin it, lol! Thanks again for the review, it’s super helpful especially for us anti-celery people ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Purchased this salad yesterday. Love it!! Had it with dinner last night. Had it for lunch today over a huge pile of spring mix, with the Apple Thyme Vinaigrette from Aldi. This salad is so misnamed. Celery is a bit player in the mix.

    1. It is April 2025 and the local Costco (Concord, CA) is still carrying the grain and celery salad. Normally don’t purchase premade salads, but this one looked so good that I grabbed one. I am neutral about celery, hate kale, love bulgur/craisins/chickpeas and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious this salad is. The apple cider vinegar dressing provided is definitely on the sweet side and perfect for this salad.

As others have mentioned, the celery is cut in small pieces and not a major ingredient. I would say the most noticeable ingredients are the bulgur, craisins, chickpeas and red onions. For more protein, add a sliced hard-boiled egg or shredded chicken breast meat. For variety, toss in some cubed roasted beets and pepitas. Serve it spooned over a Spring Mix salad with arugula if you want more greens.

  16. I love love love it and do not like celery. I was coming to Pinterest hoping for a copy cat recipe. I would love to make this at home to be able to use a little bit healthier ingredients. Iโ€™ll press on looking for it but you should for sure give it a try. We went this past Saturday and our Costco was sampling it. Samples got me again! Lol.

  17. Im obsessed with this salad!!!! I am team celery but do not get a strong celery taste in the salad. The dressing is so good I wish we could buy it!

    1. Thank you for sharing! You don’t taste a lot of celery? I wonder if I should try it then? Celery in the title scared me off…I wish they’d have a sample of this…and now I really want to try it for the dressing (I’m a dressing person, I mean who isn’t I guess lol!?) – thanks for sharing! I’ll have to try it…

      1. They did have a demonstration cart giving samples this week when I was there. Everyone was standing there eating and commenting how fabulous it is!!

  18. It is so good. But mix it up. I had with mixed greens, blackberries and some shredded chicken. Needs a bit more texture/flavors – eating alone feels very one note.

    1. Thanks for the tips – I feel that way about a lot of quinoa/farro salads too – those sound like good add ins to me! Thanks again for stopping by and sharing your serving ideas and tips, it’s super helpful!!

  19. I absolutely hate celery and could not even taste it in this salad. Too many other flavors going on…. I would buy it all the time except my son is allergic to nuts so it’s risky to have it around at home. I did top mine with some sriracha to make it a bit spicy.

    1. Wow, thats awesome to hear and learn, now I definitely am going to try it – just hoping murphy’s law doesn’t apply and it’s discontinued before my next Costco run (funny, not funny…lol!!). But really thank you for telling me! I LOVE everything else in it, and I hear the dressing is great so I’m excited to hear that you don’t have an issue with the celery- the fact it was in the title scared me away…appreciate you stopping by and sharing your review and the key tip on the celery!! Thanks a million, marie

  20. I purchased the grain and celery salad from Costco today, I really like it. I can’t believe it has 180 calories for just 1/2 cup, it is so full of good for you ingredients.
    Am I reading that correctly?

    1. yes, it’s 180 calories for 3.5 oz – so basically about 1/2 a cup or so. That’s the nutritional info I got from Costco! Glad you love it – I wish I liked celery!! Hope it sticks around for awhile ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. yes, it’s based on 12 servings per container or about a 3.5 oz serving. I imagine that’s a small serving size for most people – but it is inclusive of the dressing.
