Our Review of Organic Ground Beef at Costco
The quality and flavor of the Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef is excellent. Over the years we have bought co-op ground beef, every variety (grass fed, pasture, etc) and “step” from whole foods, and we find the overall value, quality and flavor of the organic ground beef at Costco is a win-win for our family. To be honest, the flavor of grass fed beef waivers a lot and it can be tricky with kids.
The 1.3 lb brick size is perfect for our family. For our family meals, we find 1 lb isn’t quite enough, and 2 lbs is way too much…this is the perfect quantity for us. The individual packs of ground beef are perforated and easy divided at home – some to the fridge, some to the freezer. The packages are also easy to open when frozen.
The organic Costco ground beef is 85% lean and 15% fat, which is great for many easy beef-based family meals like tacos, hamburgers, bolognese sauce, etc. Whether you’re eating keto, gluten free, feeding picky kids, looking for freezable meals or just browsing the organic options at Costco, the organic ground beef is most definitely recommended by us!
Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef:
- Raised without antibiotics
- No added growth hormones ever

Additional Questions about Organic KS Ground Beef
Is the Costco Organic Ground Beef good?
Our family loves the organic ground beef from Costco. The individual packages are a little over a pound which is a better size for our family, and the meat is lean (but not too lean) and has a fresh taste. Perfect for burgers, tacos, meatloaf, sloppy joes, bolognese sauce, etc.
Does Costco sell organic ground beef?
Yes, Costco sells it’s own brand of organic ground beef. Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef is good, too!
Is the Costco Organic Ground Beef Grass Fed?
No, Costco’s house brand Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef is not a grass-fed beef. It is USDA Organic, raised without added hormones or antibiotics.
Is Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef at Costco Pasture Raised?
No, the Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef at Costco is not pasture raised, or grass-fed.
Is Costco’s Organic Ground Beef Healthy? How Lead is it?
The organic Costco ground beef is 85% lean and 15% fat, which is generally considered a fairly lean ground beef. You can find 90/10 ground beef in other stores, which may be a better fit if you’re seeking the lowest fat option.

How do we know that this isn’t fake meat now? We just had some and it didn’t stick together like regular ground beef. And organic doesn’t mean it is grass fed does it? Is it just a cover for grain fed, barn raised beef?
I also see some other questions that do not have a follow up answer here. Country of origin is a good place to start. At least offer a place to research for the answers.
Yes, that is correct that organic does not mean grass fed or pasture raised. It just means that the cows are fed organic grain – there are a handful of additional specifics under the USDA definition or organic for beef but generally speaking you’ve got it correct. I’d refer to the USDA site to see more exact definitions if you’re interested in those.
I don’t know the country of origin of the Kirkland organic ground beef- which I agree 100% is a good question. If you haven’t reached out to Costco, I’d suggest starting with Costco customer service and see how much they can give you. After that, it may be worth perusing reddit to see if there are discussions of this topic – there’s a lot of speculation in there about suppliers – I’d take it ALL with a grain of salt (just use as ideas to look into more) as you’ll find false info there too.
In short, unless Costco discloses this information, there’s not much more to researching it in the sense that it’s all largely unconfirmed unless they confirm it.
I personally alternate between this Kirkland organic beef and when the organic grass fed step 4 ground beef at Whole Foods is on sale, I’ll usually stock up on that in my freezer. Sometimes grass fed beef can be a little gamier – so alternating works for us and I know at least 50% of the time my family is getting grass fed. I use the grass fed for tacos and the Kirkland for burgers.
There are frozen Kirkland grass fed beef patties as well at Costco (which aren’t organic, but by the nature of grass fed, these will often align closely). They are a little fattier than the ground beef which may or may not be appealing to you.
If you find any info on the Kirkland organic ground beef PLEASE share with me! I wish I had more time to do research – between social media, new product reviews on the site and all of the Google algorithm changes (which have nearly destroyed me in the last six months) – I’m fighting a solo battle to stay above water right now and will greatly appreciate you sharing anything you discover about the Kirkland Signature Organic Ground Beef!! As you pointed out, others are looking for this information too ๐
Thanks a million! Marie
hello,
have you noticed with organic costco beef that there are orange bits in the meat? it looks like the fat, instead of white there are light orange bits. i have been looking at the meat closely now when i purchase and i am able to see at least 1 bit.
Hi! I haven’t noticed that – but I still have one brick from the pack left in my fridge and I’ll pay attention when I make it this week and let you know if I see it. Was it just one pack, or have you noticed it the last few times you purchased it? I’ll let you know when I open it! Thanks for mentioning it! Marie
I started buying Kirklands organic ground beef lately and I have notice quite a bit of what looks like bacon chunk like bits. Best way to describe it. Really weird. I hope Iโm not eating human flesh or road kill ! ๐คฎ๐คญ
Eeek. I just bought some this week, I cooked one already but I’ll pay closer attention to the next two. Maybe it just needed another pass through the grinder? If you’re grossed out you can definitely take it back – though I know the idea of saving meat and taking back something that perishable often just seems like a lot of work (well that happens to me anyway lol!)…but just mentioning in case Costco is convenient for you ๐ Hope the next package is better!!
What is the COUNTRY of origin of Kirkland organic beef? NO listing of where the beef comes from. Will not buy as many products shipped from other countries and not listed. Makes me wonder how USDA Organic can monitor the organic quality. Something for consumers to think about.
That’s a great question. I will try and find out!!

Can the rappers from this ground beef be recycled
I rinse them and recycle them. I am definitely not an expert on recycling though…might want to confirm with customer service on Costco.com too ๐
