What is Manuka Honey?
Mฤnuka [ mฤยทnuยทka ] Honey comes from the nectar of the flower of the Mฤnuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). It is widely recognised as “THE” honey that all others are compared against. Most notably, Manuka Honey has naturally occurring methylglyoxal (MGO) which has antibacterial properties, and is the key compound that makes Manuka different from other honeys.
Manuka honey is the first honey to be so extensively researched and recognised for its remarkable qualities.
This video does a great job of explaining what makes Manuka Honey so rare and expensive:
Medicinal Uses
While the medicinal benefits of Manuka Honey are widely debated, Manuka Honey has been used to aide a variety of ailments for centuries in Australia and New Zealand.
The MGO found in Manuka Honey is the major antibacterial component. MGO comes from the conversion of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is found in the nectar of Manuka flowers.
The higher the concentration of MGO in the Manuka Honey, the stronger the antibacterial effect it holds.
Manuka honey is hailed as a germ fighter because of it’s unique antibacterial properties. It’s taken internally to soothe sore throats and coughs. Manuka Honey is also popular for skincare purposes such as soothing eczema, and may have anti inflammatory and digestive benefits.
*As always, please conduct your own research and talk to your healthcare provider before using Manuka Honey for any medicinal purpose.
Manuka Honey Grading System
When a label claims that it is genuine Mฤnuka Honey, you want to look for the official UMF grading system symbol and rating. UMF is a quality trademark that represents the purity and quality of Mฤnuka Honey. Costco Manuka Honey is graded by the UMF.
The rating represents the unique signature compounds characteristic of any given jar of manuka honey, including the key markers of Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal. The higher the UMF grading number on the label of Manuka Honey, the higher the concentration of the key signature compounds. This is used as a measure of purity and quality.
UMF ratings typically range between 5+ and 25+.
