Kirkland Signature 51% Cacao Chocolate Chips Now In-Store at Costco

Kirkland Signature 51% Cacao semi-sweet chocolate chips have just landed in Costco warehouses. While this 4.5 lb bag has been available online for some time, this is the first time we’ve spotted them in-store at Costco, plus they’re cheaper in the warehouse! This new [giant] bag of Costco chocolate chips is in addition to the classic Kirkland Signature semi-sweet chocolate chips. The new blue bag of Costco house brand chocolate chips features 51% cacao, real vanilla, and it’s ingredient list is plant-based. They’re also made using sustainable cocoa!
So we’re on the same page: Blue Bag = New 51% Cacao Semi Sweet and Red Bag = Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips that have been in store for some time.
Fall and winter is baking season – from chocolate chip cookies to no bake oatmeal energy bites to chocolate chip pancakes – we go through a lot of chocolate chips at our house!! Everytime I buy the huge 4.5 lb bag of chocolate chips at Costco it seems like so many, but they last if they’re stored sealed and it saves so much money buy chocolate chips in bulk, not to mention the convenience of having them on hand anytime they’re needed for a recipe!
Our Review and Differences Between Blue and Red Bags
We like these new 51% cacao semi-sweet chocolate chips from Costco in the blue bag – they are still a semi-sweet but on the darker side in comparison to the classic red bag. Although the classic red bag doesn’t state the cacao percentage, we estimate it to be in the lower end of the semi sweet range which is generally between 35% cacao to 65% cacao.
For dark chocolate lovers, the Kirkland Signature 51% Cacao chocolate chips are totally snackable (though the new blue bag doesn’t describe them as “snackable” like the classic red bag). If you aren’t such a big dark chocolate fan you might consider sticking with the red bag – but we think still a great option for baking nonetheless!
Another notable difference is that the new blue 51% cacao chocolate chips at Costco has a vegan friendly ingredient list – aka dairy free. The ingredient list on the classic red Costco semi-sweet chocolate chips contain milk fat (see image below).

The Sassandra Program is a partnership with Costco Wholesale,
Blommer, and Olam which began in October 2009 and is named after the
Sassandra River in the southwest region of Cote d’Ivoire, the original location of
the cooperatives from where we source our cocoa beans. This Program is
exclusive to Costco and is designed to: provide quality product that is traceable;
improve profits and livelihoods for the farmers/cooperative members; and
introduce respectful environmental practices. The Program is audited annually by
an independent third party.
